Choosing a Grade 10 Subject Combination: How Should Students Select Their Four Elective Subjects?

From the first year of upper secondary school, students are required to make one of the most significant decisions in their academic journey: choosing a subject stream for Grade 10 or more accurately, selecting a subject combination under Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Program.

Many parents and students believe that choosing a subject combination is simply a matter of selecting the subjects in which a student excel. In reality, however, this decision plays a crucial role in shaping academic performance throughout the three years of upper secondary education, preparation for the National High School Graduation Examination, eligibility for university admissions, and long-term career planning.

Choosing a grade level for 10th grade and what parents need to know

Under Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Curriculum, students entering Grade 10 are no longer required to follow the same curriculum for all subjects as they did at the lower secondary level. In addition to eight compulsory subjects and educational activities namely Literature, Mathematics, English, History, Physical Education, National Defense and Security Education, Experiential and Career Guidance Activities, and Local Education Content. Students must choose four additional subjects from a list of nine elective options: Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Informatics, Music, and Fine Arts.
Theoretyically, students can choose from as many as 126 different subject combinations. However, in practice, most upper secondary schools offer only 5 to 8 subject combinations, which are generally designed around two broad academic streams: the Natural Sciences and the Social Sciences.

This requires both parents and students to carefully consider their subject combination choices before entering Grade 10. More importantly, students are expected to follow their selected subject combination throughout their upper secondary education.

What factors are used to select a grade level for 10?

1. Students’ learning abilities

This is one of the most important factors that families should consider. Parents and students should objectively assess the student’s academic performance at the lower secondary level, learning aptitude, individual strengths, and the subjects in which they demonstrate outstanding ability. Choosing a Grade 10 subject combination that aligns with a student’s capabilities can help build confidence, enhance academic performance, and support consistent learning outcomes throughout the three years of upper secondary education.

2. Future career orientation

Many university programs today have specific requirements regarding admission subject combinations. Therefore, students are advised to explore their areas of interest and intended fields of study early before selecting their Grade 10 subject combination.

For example:

  • STEM-related fields (Engineering and Technology) often prioritize Mathematics, Physics, and Information Technology.
  • Business and Management fields may require Mathematics, English, and Economic and Legal Education.
  • Medicine and Pharmacy fields are closely associated with Biology and Chemistry.
  • Media, Law, and Social Sciences fields are typically aligned with Geography, History, and Economic and Legal Education.

3. A love for the subject

A suitable subject is not only one that students learn well, but also one that students genuinely enjoy. Because throughout their three years of high school, interest becomes the driving force that helps them maintain their interest in learning, overcome pressure and persevere in pursuing their goals.

4. The subjects in the combination need to complement each other

Many students tend to choose subjects based on individual preferences without fully considering the interconnection between different subjects. However, selecting a Grade 10 subject combination is only truly effective when it helps students build a coherent and mutually supportive knowledge foundation.

This approach also helps reduce the risk of students having to spend excessive time on completely unrelated areas of knowledge, thereby minimizing unnecessary academic pressure throughout their learning process.

Choosing a grade level for 10: Deciding on a strategy for your future career

In reality, many students only realize that their subject choices are not suitable when they have already reached Grade 11 or Grade 12. At that stage, changing their academic pathway becomes significantly more difficult. Therefore, instead of making choices based on emotions, peer influence, or trends, students should be given the opportunity to better understand their own abilities, explore their career interests, and build an appropriate learning pathway from the very beginning.

To provide parents and students with a more scientific perspective on subject combination selection and career orientation, TIS International School is organizing the seminar: “DISCOVERING POTENTIAL – ORIENTING THE FUTURE – BUILDING A HIGH SCHOOL & UNIVERSITY ROADMAP.”

At the program, parents and students will be able to:

  • Identify students’ abilities, career interests, and personal strengths.
  • Understand the relationship between Grade 10 subject combinations, university majors, and admission opportunities.
  • Build a suitable high school and university pathway aligned with individual goals.
  • Learn how to support and accompany their children throughout the career orientation process and in making important academic decisions.
