Being an international student or studying abroad is a dream for many students. For my case it was a unique and eye-opening experience, something that I consider a privilege. There are many desirable things that come with being an international student. They include meeting with new people, having new experiences and expanding one\u2019s horizons in terms of life and employment opportunities. However, despite the good things, one also encounters a fair share of challenges. While many students do very well in their new environments, most, including me, still face challenges at one point or another. Thus, I would like to share some of the challenges that I have experienced and how I have learned to deal with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u00f3 r\u1ea5t nhi\u1ec1u th\u1ee9 tuy\u1ec7t di\u1ec7u \u0111ang ch\u00e0o \u0111\u00f3n em \u1edf v\u00f9ng \u0111\u1ea5t m\u1edbi. T\u00f4i \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c g\u1eb7p nh\u1eefng con ng\u01b0\u1eddi m\u1edbi, c\u00f3 th\u00eam nhi\u1ec1u tr\u1ea3i nghi\u1ec7m th\u00fa v\u1ecb v\u1ec1 cu\u1ed9c s\u1ed1ng v\u00e0 c\u01a1 h\u1ed9i trong c\u00f4ng vi\u1ec7c. V\u00ec v\u1eady, trong l\u00e1 th\u01b0 n\u00e0y t\u00f4i s\u1ebd chia s\u1ebb m\u1ed9t v\u00e0i kh\u00f3 kh\u0103n c\u1ee7a m\u00ecnh v\u00e0 c\u00e1ch t\u00f4i \u0111\u00e3 v\u01b0\u1ee3t qua ch\u00fang ra sao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For most people, one of the most significant challenges is culture shock. Meeting people from new backgrounds and cultures, and learning how well to interact with them is a challenge for many international students. This is largely because many individuals have lived their lives with people from one culture and are not well prepared for the differences that they encounter with people from other cultures. However, in my case, I was able to overcome culture shock due to my previous learning experiences at TIS. For the three years that I was a student at TIS, I was exposed to life as an international student and had knowledge of the challenges that I will have to overcome if I ended up being one. During one instance, I attended a summer camp where the subject was life overseas for international students. The summer camp prepared me well for the challenges I will have to face in my study abroad. As a result, my transition into the new life was smooth and I was able to overcome culture shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuy nhi\u00ean, t\u00f4i l\u1ea1i v\u01b0\u1ee3t qua \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c th\u1eed th\u00e1ch n\u00e0y d\u1ec5 d\u00e0ng nh\u1edd nh\u1eefng tr\u1ea3i nghi\u1ec7m khi h\u1ecdc t\u1eadp t\u1ea1i TIS. Trong su\u1ed1t ba n\u0103m t\u1ea1i TIS, t\u00f4i \u0111\u00e3 th\u1ef1c s\u1ef1 s\u1ed1ng nh\u01b0 m\u1ed9t h\u1ecdc sinh qu\u1ed1c t\u1ebf v\u00e0 t\u00edch l\u0169y \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c nh\u1eefng hi\u1ec3u bi\u1ebft v\u1ec1 nh\u1eefng kh\u00f3 kh\u0103n m\u00e0 m\u1ed9t h\u1ecdc sinh qu\u1ed1c t\u1ebf g\u1eb7p ph\u1ea3i. C\u00f3 m\u1ed9t l\u1ea7n t\u00f4i \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c tham gia m\u1ed9t tr\u1ea1i h\u00e8; ch\u1ee7 \u0111\u1ec1 c\u1ee7a n\u00f3 l\u00e0 cu\u1ed9c s\u1ed1ng c\u1ee7a h\u1ecdc sinh \u1edf n\u01b0\u1edbc ngo\u00e0i. Tr\u1ea1i h\u00e8 n\u00e0y \u0111\u00e3 trang b\u1ecb r\u1ea5t k\u1ef9 cho t\u00f4i tr\u01b0\u1edbc nh\u1eefng th\u1eed th\u00e1ch t\u00f4i s\u1ebd ph\u1ea3i \u0111\u1ed1i m\u1eb7t khi \u0111i du h\u1ecdc. Nh\u1edd v\u1eady, T\u00f4i \u0111\u00e3 t\u00edch l\u0169y \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c r\u1ea5t nhi\u1ec1u kinh nghi\u1ec7m \u0111\u1ec3 \u0111\u1ed1i m\u1eb7t v\u1edbi nh\u1eefng kh\u00e1c bi\u1ec7t v\u0103n h\u00f3a trong th\u1eddi gian \u1ea5y.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second challenge I faced, which is a challenge that affects many international students, is language barrier. Being a native Asian meant that English was not my first language. Even though I had a good foundation in English from my time at TIS, I found it difficult to communicate effectively during the first days. Nevertheless, Instead of avoiding talking to people, I tried to make new friends and speaking as much English as I could. The decision turned out to be helpful since I was not only corrected me when I said something wrong, but I gained more confidence to speak with others. In retrospect, I think that my communication challenges stemmed from the fear of being wrong especially when speaking to people who have used English as their first language. Therefore, overcoming such fear is crucial towards overcoming communication challenges and helping one to be confident in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u1eb7c d\u00f9 t\u00f4i \u0111\u00e3 c\u00f3 \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c n\u1ec1n t\u1ea3ng ti\u1ebfng Anh t\u1ed1t khi h\u1ecdc t\u1ea1i TIS, nh\u01b0ng vi\u1ec7c giao ti\u1ebfp sao cho hi\u1ec7u qu\u1ea3 v\u1eabn l\u00e0 m\u1ed9t v\u1ea5n \u0111\u1ec1 kh\u00f4ng nh\u1ecf \u0111\u1ed1i v\u1edbi t\u00f4i trong nh\u1eefng ng\u00e0y \u0111\u1ea7u du h\u1ecdc. Thay v\u00ec thu m\u00ecnh l\u1ea1i, t\u00f4i \u0111\u00e3 ch\u1ee7 \u0111\u1ed9ng k\u1ebft b\u1ea1n v\u00e0 n\u00f3i ti\u1ebfng Anh c\u00e0ng nhi\u1ec1u c\u00e0ng t\u1ed1t. Nh\u1edd \u0111\u00f3, t\u00f4i v\u1eeba c\u00f3 th\u1ec3 s\u1eeda l\u1ed7i cho m\u00ecnh v\u1eeba c\u00f3 th\u00eam s\u1ef1 t\u1ef1 tin trong giao ti\u1ebfp. Nh\u1edb l\u1ea1i th\u1eddi gian \u0111\u00f3, t\u00f4i cho r\u1eb1ng nh\u1eefng kh\u00f3 kh\u0103n trong giao ti\u1ebfp c\u1ee7a t\u00f4i xu\u1ea5t ph\u00e1t t\u1eeb n\u1ed7i lo s\u1ee3 b\u1ecb sai nh\u1ea5t l\u00e0 khi n\u00f3i chuy\u1ec7n v\u1edbi ng\u01b0\u1eddi b\u1ea3n x\u1ee9. Do v\u1eady, \u0111\u1ec3 c\u1ea3i thi\u1ec7n n\u0103ng l\u1ef1c giao ti\u1ebfp b\u1eb1ng ti\u1ebfng Anh c\u1ee7a m\u00ecnh, ch\u00fang ta c\u1ea7n v\u01b0\u1ee3t qua n\u1ed7i lo s\u1ee3 \u0111\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another struggle for me was in academics. Science classes are already difficult by themselves, but it was even more frustrating for me when I fully understood a concept but was unable to express it satisfactorily in English. However, the problem was quickly fixed when I utilized resources I had acquired from my time at TIS. I had attended science classes that were offered in English, and the resources proved to be highly beneficial the second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuy nhi\u00ean, nh\u1edd c\u00e1c ti\u1ebft khoa h\u1ecdc b\u1eb1ng ti\u1ebfng Anh t\u1ea1i TIS, t\u00f4i \u0111\u00e3 t\u00edch l\u0169y \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c v\u1ed1n thu\u1eadt ng\u1eef khoa h\u1ecdc d\u1ed3i d\u00e0o, v\u00e0 ngu\u1ed3n ki\u1ebfn th\u1ee9c n\u00e0y th\u1ef1c s\u1ef1 v\u00f4 c\u00f9ng h\u1eefu \u00edch, gi\u00fap t\u00f4i kh\u1eafc ph\u1ee5c \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c kh\u00f3 kh\u0103n r\u1ea5t nhanh.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
